A Little History
The modern Nordic Tipi is inspired by the Sami people of Northern Scandinavia and North Western Russia. Evidence suggests they have resided in areas of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Russian Kola Peninsula for nearly 5000 years. They are a fascinating culture with traditional beliefs that are closely connected with the land and an emphasis on the importance of personal spirituality and its inter-connectivity to one’s daily life.
Traditional Sami culture participate in a variety of industries, most notably as a Nomadic Reindeer herding culture. This lifestyle in the Arctic Regions demanded a temporary dwelling, known as a Kata, that would withstand the heavy winds and cold temperatures of the Northern regions. Conical frames were erected with wooden poles and covered with the wind and rain efficient hides of animals. The Sami would leave the wooden frames along the reindeer migration routes leaving only the hides, which were light and easy to pack, to be brought to the next Kata. They are an efficient and strong culture, closely tied to their roots and the landscape of the arctic regions.
It is our intention at Nordic Skies to honor and respect the Sami People. The Tipis are a home and as we gather with friends and family, we remember to connect, with one another, the land under our feet and the skies above.
